Creature & quadruped rigging

Auto-rig quadrupeds, creatures, and non-humanoid characters

Popular auto-riggers only handle humanoids. Nira rigs four-legged animals, birds, dragons, and stranger shapes, then animates them from a plain-language description.

Nira animating a non-humanoid character
  • Four legs, wings, tails

The AI rigging model builds a skeleton that fits the creature, whatever its shape.

  • Ready-made creatures

Start from the quadruped or bird character template if you do not have a model yet.

  • Animated from text

Describe a gallop, an idle, or a wing flap and Nira animates the creature for you.

Why creature rigging is hard to automate

Humanoid auto-riggers work because every human has roughly the same skeleton. Creatures do not: a horse, a crow, and a dragon need different bone chains, and a tool that assumes two arms and two legs has nowhere to put a tail or a wing.

That is why tools like Mixamo reject non-humanoid meshes outright, and why creature rigs have usually meant hours of manual work in Blender or Maya.

How Nira rigs creatures

Nira's AI rigging model predicts bones and skin weights from the mesh itself, so it is not limited to a list of supported species. You upload the creature, tell Nira what it is, and it builds a rig that fits the body you gave it. If you just want to experiment, the quadruped and bird character templates give you a rigged creature to start with.

How creatures get animated

You animate a creature the same way you animate a human: describe the motion. For humanoids, Nira uses a motion model trained on human movement. Creatures move differently, so for them Nira writes the animation as keyframes on your rig, building the gait, the idle, or the flap you asked for. Either way the result lands on the timeline, where you can adjust poses and timing like any hand-keyed clip.

Frequently asked questions

Can I animate a quadruped from a text prompt?

Yes. Describe the motion and Nira animates it. For quadrupeds and other creatures, Nira writes the animation as keyframes on the rig rather than using its human motion model, and you can edit the result on the timeline.

What creatures can Nira rig?

Quadrupeds, birds, dragons, and other non-humanoid shapes. The AI rigging model fits a skeleton to the mesh rather than choosing from a fixed list, and there are quadruped and bird character templates to start from.

Will a creature rig work in Unity or Unreal?

Yes. Nira exports creature rigs and their animation as GLB or GLTF, which both engines import. Non-humanoid rigs use each engine's generic rig type rather than its humanoid retargeting system.
